I absolutely loved this book. There are so many things about it to love: the writing is exquisite, the subject matter important and courageous, and the genre of historical fiction is one of my favorites. I also loved the structure with three different characters (all strong women) from the same family in three different time periods.
I think the book also spoke to me on a personal level because I spent a few years living in Michigan in the 1990s, and spent over a decade immersed in civil rights law. So the subject matter of racism in the Detroit area over the years was very close to my heart. What an awesome debut novel!! I cannot wait to read what Erin Bartels writes next. Brava!
