by Toni Morrison

Wow! I finally read this book. It’s been on my list for years and I was drawn to it recently. It’s powerful, heart wrenching, tragic, mystical, beautiful and mysterious. The language flows, the plot jumps around, and the characters go deep. The themes are important and powerful: the horrors of slavery; how the past can haunt (literally and figuratively); how human beings hurt each other; how deep trauma can run; the yearning for love, acceptance, and forgiveness; and finding beauty in unspeakable circumstances and acts. It feels like Toni Morrison ripped out a piece of her soul to get this book on the page. I am grateful to her for this work of art.
